My third assignment during my senior year at SVA was to create a sensor based medical digital experience. Nearly 75% of American adults suffer from various forms of periodontal disease and don’t even know it. Therefore, I created a way to help people monitor their teeth in interest of preventing detrimental dental damage.

+ THE IDEA
Pearly is a mouth guard sensor that detects and communicates oral health and hygiene to a mobile app, enabling regular monitoring at home.
+ GETTING THE APP / ON BOARDING
When users download the app they will be guided through a brief onboarding questionnaire, similar to an abridged medical form you would fill out at the dentist.
+ CONNECTING DEVICE
Once users input their medical information, they will need to connect their Pearly device to the Pearly mobile application via Bluetooth.
+ THE PEARLY DEVICE
Pearly is a simple mouth guard-like that device using photo resistor technology that records color changes in the gums and teeth, detecting yellowness, redness on the gums, and plaque. The base of the Pearly device is a jelly-like bite strip that takes readings on where cavity depressions are.
+ TAKE FIRST TEST
Once the device is fully connected, the user will need to take their first test. Testing will be done once a week to monitor and regulate dental hygiene.
After the first test, users will be given an initial ranking specific to Pearly standards: Pearly, Sparkly, Shiny, Cleanly, Dirty, and Filthy.
Every test preceding the first, users will be given or deducted points depending on the status of their dental hygiene for that week. These points will eventually result in users ranking up if they are taking proper care of their teeth.
Following every test the user takes with the Pearly device, analytical results will be given based on progressions or regressions in their dental hygiene.
If Pearly detects a continuing problem that brushing, flossing and mouthwash cannot solve, warning notifications will recommend an over the counter solution before a dentist visit.
One of the most valuable aspects of the Pearly experience is the cleaning feature. Pearly interprets the users’ problem areas and provides the best ways to clean your teeth in order to improve dental hygiene.
+ THE DASHBOARD TO DO IT ALL AGAIN
The dashboard screens are where the user will be able to navigate and access all of the main Pearly functions such as taking a test, cleaning, and tracking their progress.
+ FLOW & SCREEN ITERATIONS
The first time users experience the Pearly application, they will be walked through all features from set up to completion. All features can be accessed from the 3 tabs on the dashboard navigation.
Cinema 4D was a very helpful tool when creating the Pearly device and designs within the pearly application. Using simple modeling and dynamics, I was able to create a model concept of the pearly device, and fun animations to keep users entertained while using the application for something as serious as dental hygiene.
