My first assignment of senior year at SVA was to create a digital experience about weather. In 2015, virtual reality and 360 degree video content was in the spotlight making it more mainstream and approachable than ever. This project was a great learning opportunity to work in the realm of virtual reality.

A virtual reality weather simulation that educates people about extreme weather conditions.

+ WHERE ?
Storm will travel to various museums across the USA over the course of 2 months. The exhibit will consist of comfy chairs, quality headphones, and Oculus Rift headsets for the optimal Storm experience. People will be notified of the exhibit’s location through the posters around the city

Upon entering the experience, users will be greeted by an introductory screen followed by options for different Storm weather experiences.

+ HURRICANE LESSON
A hurricane is a catastrophic storm with rapid winds, thunder, lightning, and hundreds of gallons of rainfall. Hurricanes typically form over warm tropical waters at about 82 degrees fahrenheit. I was inspired to create a tropical environment with vibrant colors to demonstrate the hurricane conditions.

+ SELECT CATEGORY
After a brief introduction on hurricane conditions, the user will have the option to hover through and learn about the 5 categories of hurricanes. Then, the user can choose a category they want to experience.

+ TORNADO LESSON
Tornados are rapidly rotating columns of air that form inside storms and connect with ground via funnel by cloud. I illustrated torrential high force winds, giant hailstones, and flashes of lightning to reflect harsh weather conditions. Because twisters usually form over large open areas, I used a farm environment as inspiration to create the tornado world.

Cinema 4D was a crucial tool for Storms 3D scenes and animations. I had a lot of fun modeling and texturing the scenes to bring the concept to life.
